Skydiving & Common Aircraft

Have you ever really wanted to know how it feels to fly? Parachuting describes the process of skydiving out of an airplane and descending slightly to the earth. While it may feel like flying, skydiving is a bit different. The level of security provided by having a parachute is the predominate difference. Your chute slows down your descent, not only making your freefall safer, but also providing you with a beautiful canopy tour thousands of feet in the air!

If it's your very first time you will be harnessed in with a Tandem Master! Your tandem instructor will be with you the entire time! This gives you the chance to focus more on the landscape rather than focusing on saving your own life. Once your free fall is over, the instructor will release your parachute providing a beautiful glide before a safe landing.

So just how high will you be when you jump?

When it comes to skydiving, there's a an altitude range that's necessary to climb to. Generally this range is between 10,000 and 14,000 feet. That's between 2.5 and 3 miles straight off the ground! Limitations are in place for jumping as the higher you go the less oxygen you have.

You'll be taught on how each of your parachutes are controlled before you leave the ground.

If your main parachute defects, the backup will spring into action. The reserve parachute NEVER fails. It is launched using what is known as a AAD or automatic activation device that detects a low altitude without the main parachute and automatically deploys to enable your safe landing. At some locations, a "static line jump" may be used for parachute release training. During this activity, you jump from the plane with a secure tether to the aircraft.

The Most Common Aircraft to Skydive From

Lighter planes are the most commonly used in skydives. These planes can transport a range of skydivers from as few as 4 to as many as 28. Nevertheless, light sport aircraft predominately are used for jumping as they are much faster than commercial aircraft, often taking a load of skydivers up every 15 to 20 minutes!

Depending on the power of the engine, it can take as little as 10 or 20 minutes to hit diving height. Unsurprisingly, the size of the engine determines how quickly it gets up to this point. The faster planes, like the King Airs with PT6A-20 engines, are regarded as the fastest in the world in their ascent.

These planes get up to diving altitude quickly and can accommodate 15 passengers. {The King Airs, however, are only the second most popular aircraft used for diving.} The most prominent twin and single engine planes for skydivers are the Havilland Canada DHC-6-Twin Otter, and the Pacific Aerospace PAC P-750 XSTOL, respectively. Popular diving planes are typically powered by pistons or turbines. Turbine and piston-powered planes are separated by a key difference: turbine planes are lighter and use their fuel more efficiently. While they supply a similar horsepower as a standard piston engine, crafts with turbine engines are typically more expensive.
